Press Release:

Essex Student Wins Denker Qualifier Chess Tournament

Based on a perfect score, Haizhou Xu, a tenth grader at Essex High School won the right to represent Vermont in a tournament of high school chess champions. The Denker is a six-day tournament held in NJ from July 28 to August 2 in conjunction with the U.S. Chess Open. Nick Oblak of Trinity Baptist School was selected as the alternate based on his second place finish.

The tournament took place yesterday at Camels Hump Middle School and included the top five high school competitors from last week’s Vermont Scholastic Chess Championships. The other three competitors were Oliver Chase of Fair Haven Union High School, Michael Brooks, home schooled, and James Girouard III, South Burlington High School. The previous two years Oliver Chase represented Vermont at the Denker.
